The Museum Leikki’s Surveys
Between 2020 and 2025, the Museum Leikki has organized 11 online surveys on play knowledge. If you are interested in accessing material from the surveys, please contact info@museoleikki.fi.
SURVEYS
- Children of the Eighties online survey, 2019. The survey asked people who were children in the 1980s to recall their favorite toys and games, as well as cultural phenomena of that decade. A total of 305 responses were received.
- Phenomenal Childhood online survey, 2020. This survey collected memories of childhood from Finns of all ages. Respondents were asked to revisit key memories of play, toys, and childhood experiences. An impressive 376 responses were received.
- Best Toys and Games Ever online survey, 2020. This survey gathered information about contemporary childhood, toys, and play. It was aimed at the best experts on the subject, children! The survey could be filled in together with an adult, or independently if the child was able to read and write. A total of 97 responses were received.
- Toy, Play, and Imagination Bringing Comfort online survey, 2021. This survey collected experiences of how toys or play have provided comfort or security and helped in challenging situations. 7 responses were received.
- The Toys and Games of My Childhood online survey, 2021. This survey collected childhood memories from Finland’s cultural and linguistic minorities. 7 responses were received.
- My Little Ponies as a Hobby online survey, 2023. This survey documented My Little Pony as a hobby in Finland, such as collecting, customizing, and the brony subculture. The survey was created in collaboration with hobbyists. 78 responses were received. Check Pony Friendship is Forever! mini exhibition.
- Japanese Popular Culture as a Hobby in Finland online survey, 2023. This survey collected information on hobbies related to manga, anime, cosplay, gaming, and conventions in Finland. It was created in collaboration with hobbyists. 564 responses were received. Check ‘From Tokyo to Tapiola’ online exhibition.
- Käärijä Fandom online survey, 2023. This survey collected memories and experiences related to the Käärijä phenomenon and Käärijä fandom, as well as objects, photos, and videos. 77 responses were received, including a significant number of photographs and a few objects in addition to oral history.
- Rainbow Childhood online survey, 2023. This survey gathered memories, experiences, and objects related to the childhood, youth, play, and toys of LGBTQ+ people. It was organized in cooperation with the Labour Archives’ Commission of Finnish Labour Tradition and the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas. 33 responses were received.
- Juho Jussila Wooden Toys online survey, 2023. This survey collected memories and experiences related to the toy company Juho Jussila’s wooden toys (Jukka Toys). There were three versions of the survey: one for the general public, one for early childhood educators, and one in Japanese for the company’s largest export market, Japan. Responses: 35 (general public), 3 (educators), and 3 (Japanese).
- Transformers online survey, 2025. This survey collected Finnish fans’ memories and experiences with Transformers. 52 responses were received. Check Transformers – From Toy to Legend mini-exhibition.
In addition, the museum has carried out a joint collection with the Finnish Literature Society (Children’s Self-made Magazines, 2023) and will also archive material from the Recess Play project of the Craft Museum of Finland’s Kukako initiative.
