Neon Genesis Evangelion is a mecha anime series written and directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by Gainax. Mecha are typically human-shaped, large robots, usually piloted by human pilots inside them. The original anime series consisted of 26 episodes released between 1995 and 1996. In addition to this, seven movies as well as manga and games have been made based on the series. The series remains popular among enthusiasts, with many considering it one of the best anime series of all time.
In 2015, 15 years after the catastrophe called the Second Impact, 14-year-old Shinji Ikari is recruited by the mysterious organization NERV to pilot an Evangelion combat robot. Evangelions are built to fight Angels, giant beings threatening the existence of humanity. The series deals with topics such as trauma, philosophy, and religion.
