The Final Fantasy video game series, developed and published by Square Enix, has been very popular in Finland. The first installment of the series, Final Fantasy I, or more commonly known as FFI, was released in 1987. The so-called main series of Final Fantasy comprises 16 installments, with the latest, FFXVI, released in 2023. Perhaps the most famous Final Fantasy game is FFVII, the seventh installment in the main series, which in 1997 was the first release of the series to enter the European market. Outside the main series, numerous other games have been made under the Final Fantasy name. The series’ music is often played at conventions’ concerts, its characters are frequently cosplayed, and anime and movies related to the game series have been brought to Finland.
