A cosplay costume often includes many parts, such as a wig, makeup, accessories, the costume itself, shoes, as well as props (such as swords and wings). Some cosplayers buy ready-made clothes or complete outfits, using them as they are or modifying them. Others make part of or all of their costumes entirely by themselves. There are no strict guidelines for assembling a costume, and everyone pursues the hobby in their own way.
In Finland, cosplay has long been seen as a very handicraft-oriented hobby because it was not possible to buy costumes ready-made in the early years of the hobby. Many cosplay enthusiasts are self-taught and share their knowledge by creating tutorial videos online for other enthusiasts or those interested in the hobby. Due to the challenge of obtaining information, sharing knowledge with other hobbyists was considered important in the early days of the hobby: hobbyists taught and guided one another, discoveries were shared, and friends were helped.
Materials and supplies have evolved along with the hobby and advanced with the increase in technology and available materials. Nowadays, for example, the popularity of 3D printing has grown among cosplayers. Due to the spread and popularity of cosplay, many shops specializing in the sale of cosplay costumes have emerged. The cosplay scene is gradually seen to have shifted from a focus on DIY to the use of increasingly ready-made costumes.
