
Berserk, starting in 1989, is a dark fantasy manga series drawn and written by Kentaro Miura. After Miura’s death (2021), the series has been written by Miura’s close friend Kouji Mori and illustrated by Miura’s assistants at Studio Gaga. Three anime series (1997–1998, 2012–2013, 2016–2017) and three video games (1999, 2004, 2016) have been made based on the manga. Berserk is considered one of the most influential works of dark fantasy and has served as inspiration for numerous other manga, anime, and video games.
At the heart of Berserk’s story are Guts, a swordsman, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary group. The story follows Guts’ quest for revenge against Griffith after he betrayed Guts and sacrificed his own soldiers to obtain demonic powers. The series is highly violent and dark, tackling many themes concerning humanity, such as morality, betrayal, relationships, and destiny.
